September 6, 2024 (Boston, MA) – Massachusetts and Rhode Island announced plans to purchase more than 2,800 megawatts of clean energy from offshore wind projects that could power more than a million homes in the region. The first coordinated procurement of its kind will receive power from three projects developed by SouthCoast Wind, Avangrid, and Vineyard Offshore. Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) released the following statement in response.

“This offshore wind purchase collaboration represents a pivotal opportunity for advancing clean energy and reducing climate-damaging emissions across the region,” said Kate Sinding Daly, Senior Vice President of Law and Policy at CLF. “Fossil fuels harm our climate, health, and finances, and New England families and businesses deserve clean, local energy. CLF will participate in the next review process to ensure that the proposed projects serve the best interests of New England’s families, businesses, and environment.”

Earlier this year, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island worked together to solicit bids from developers in a first-in-the-nation tri-state offshore wind procurement. Connecticut has yet to announce its plans.

CLF experts are available for further comment.
