June 5, 2019 (BOSTON, MA) – In response to the first reported death of a critically endangered North Atlantic right whale this year, Conservation Law Foundation issued the following statement.

“There are so few right whales left that every death brings this species closer to extinction,” said CLF Senior Attorney Erica Fuller. “The time for talk is over. Both the U.S. and Canadian governments need to protect this majestic species before it disappears from our oceans forever.”

There are approximately 411 North Atlantic right whales remaining, and only seven new calves were born this year. CLF has filed two lawsuits in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to force federal regulators to comply with their legal responsibility to protect critically endangered North Atlantic right whales.

CLF experts are available for further comment.
