A federal judge ruled that the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument was created legally. The ruling confirms that the Antiquities Act can be used to protect the ocean, keeping these underwater spaces safe from oil drilling and commercial fishing.
“This decision guarantees that one of the most fragile and scientifically important areas in the North Atlantic will be protected from destructive activities like oil drilling and industrial fishing,” said Peter Shelley, Senior Counsel at Conservation Law Foundation.

It’s been two years since President Obama designated the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National monument, providing full protection of this remarkable ecosystem for generations to come. That includes creatures like sperm whales, ocean sunfish, and basking sharks.
The Trump administration has proposed changes to how the Endangered Species Act gets implemented that would be detrimental to countless species. Let the administration know you oppose these changes and support a strong Endangered Species Act so that right whales – and thousands of other species – will continue to be protected.
