UPDATE: It’s the one-year anniversary of the Merrimack Valley gas explosion, and communities are still recovering from the disaster. It’s a stark reminder that we need to prioritize the health and safety of our communities, which means getting off dirty gas. Our aging gas infrastructure is expensive, leaky, and dangerous. We have cleaner, safer alternatives like electric stoves and hot water heaters ready to go. It’s time to swap out polluting gas for clean energy that doesn’t run the risk of exploding.

In a move that will harm Americans’ health, economy, and climate, the Trump administration rolled out its proposed replacement to the Obama-era Clean Power Plan in June. The landmark Clean Power Plan was set to cut emissions from dirty coal plants—slashing pollution and combatting the looming climate crisis. CLF is fighting back against this shameless gift to the dying fossil fuel industry.

The new federal suit alleges construction activity will suspend 1,500 tons of sediment into the bay, causing high suspended-solid concentrations, will release pathogens, contaminants and nutrients into the estuary. It also disputes claims there would be no degradation of the waterway, as well as natural and commercial oyster beds in the area.

“Little Bay is a unique resource that is already threatened by water pollution and the climate crisis,” said Tom Irwin, Vice President and Director of CLF New Hampshire. “The project would severely disrupt this sensitive area and cause unacceptable and unnecessary harm to the bay. The Army Corps was required to fully assess the impacts of this project, and it has failed to fulfill that critical duty.”

A federal court judge will soon decide whether a lawsuit should go forward that the Sierra Club and Conservation Law Foundation has filed over alleged violations of water-discharge permits for the Merrimack Station coal-burning power plant in Bow.
